British Railways aimed to create a single, adaptable coach suitable for various purposes across the country. The Mark 1 coach, constructed between 1951 and 1963, combined the best features from the coaches of the big four companies. The Mark 1 coaches remained in service in the UK until 2010, with the withdrawal of the Mark One-based Class 421 on the Lymington Branch Line.
