The P-51D Mustang, a true thoroughbred fighting aeroplane, surpassed all other variants in terms of production numbers and introduced several improvements. With a redesigned wing, teardrop canopy, and modified rear fuselage, the P-51D became the preferred mount of many USAAF aces and served as the primary US fighter in the European Theatre from its introduction in mid-1944.
