The Focke-Wulf Fw190, first flown in 1939, posed an immediate threat to RAF fighters upon its introduction in late 1941, surpassing the Spitfire V in speed and maneuverability. The A-8 variant, with heavy armament, entered service in 1944 to counter Allied daylight raids, but was eventually outclassed by the new Allied fighters.
