The ED75-700 series was introduced in 1971 and was equipped with salt damage proofing for use on the Ou Main Line and Uetsu Main Line along the Japan Sea coast. Most of the vehicles inherited by JR East, at the time of privitisation, had already been retired due to the abolition of passenger trains. The Akita Rolling Stock Centre stll had ED75-700 series after the 2000s, and in addition to construction and special trains, they also pulled some freight trains until 2008. Currentlly, No. 767 is in use.
