The 500 Series is rolling stock developed exclusively by JR West for the Tokaido-Shinkansen.

Characterised by a sharp, sleek design sugestive of an aircraft, it travelled at 300 km/h, the fastest train speed in the world at the time. It retired from service as the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Nozomi in 2010 and is now operating as the “Kodama” train, stopping at every station on the Sanyo Shinkansen.
